Leicester hide as Callum Hudson-Odoi tells Chelsea he wants to leave on loan | chelsea
Callum Hudson-Odoi has asked to leave Chelsea on loan before the transfer window closes. The winger wasn’t even named on the bench when Chelsea opened their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win over Everton on Saturday. Hudson-Odoi has struggled for opportunities under Thomas Tuchel and he believes a move would boost his chances of playing regularly.
Leicester and Southampton are two of the clubs keen to sign Hudson-Odoi on loan. Chelsea are interested in signing Leicester centre-back Wesley Fofana this summer and are ready to offer £85m for the Frenchman, but they have yet to indicate they will offer Hudson-Odoi to the Midlands club in the framework of this agreement.
Tuchel’s decision not to include the striker against Everton came as a surprise given Chelsea lack attacking options. They loaned out Romelu Lukaku to Internazionale while Timo Werner wasn’t involved against Everton either. Werner is believed to be set to join RB Leipzig on loan.
Still, there was still no room for Hudson-Odoi, who was uninjured. The 21-year-old was surprised at his omission by Tuchel, who didn’t hesitate to criticize the player’s candidacy.
Part of the frustration for Hudson-Odoi, who came close to joining Borussia Dortmund on loan last year, is that he hasn’t had a run in his preferred position. He wants to play on the left of Chelsea’s front three, but Tuchel has often used him as a right-back.
Tuchel has clearly decided he can’t rely on Hudson-Odoi, who has struggled to regain his best form since recovering from a serious Achilles injury in 2019.
It’s been difficult for Hudson-Odoi, who came through Chelsea’s academy, to live up to the hype since he was handed a lucrative five-year deal in September 2019. That deal was preceded by Bayern Munich trying to sign the winger.
Meanwhile, West Ham failed with a bid to loan out another of Chelsea’s academy stars. West Ham have inquired about a deal for Conor Gallagher but have been told the midfielder is not interested in leaving Stamford Bridge. Gallagher, who impressed on loan at Crystal Palace last season, made his Chelsea debut after coming off the bench against Everton.
West Ham are keen to improve their attacking midfield options. They are ready to listen to offers from Saïd Benrahma and Nikola Vlasic. Nottingham Forest have shown an interest in Benrahma following his promotion from the Championship.
