Ipswich Town: Barry Cotter leaves Portman Road

Barry Cotter left Ipswich Town by mutual consent.

The Irishman, signed from Limerick in January 2018, has made four appearances for Town’s first-team but hasn’t played at all this season.

His contract was due to expire this summer, but the two sides reached a mutual agreement for him to leave sooner.

“We have accepted that Barry is leaving the club now and we wish him the best for the future,” Town chief executive officer Lee O’Neill said.

After the news broke, the Irishman tweeted: “Thank you @IpswichTown! A great club and great people inside, thank you to the academy for everything that has been done for me on and off the pitch, I will always be grateful for the connections, advice and guidance! Hope to see you back where you are, all the best. “

Cotter’s debut came the night former boss Mick McCarthy finally left Town, the impressive young Irish right-back against Barnsley before being replaced just after the hour mark.

This drew boos from the local crowd, with McCarthy revealing he was leaving answering questions about his replacement after the game.

He made another league appearance before the end of this season, in Reading, before spending the next campaign in the Under-23s under Paul Hurst and then Paul Lambert.

He was back in Lambert’s mind last season, scoring the winning penalty in the shootout against Peterborough before appearing in the FA Cup home loss to Coventry.

It turned out to be his last appearance at Ipswich, with two loan spells at Chelmsford also part of his career at Town.
